Much ado about potatoes

hope you're not offended by my cooking suggestions. I think that vicky will need all the help she can get.

Potatoes
watch for any signs of green under the potatoe skin. the green forms when the potatoes are exposed to sunlight and the potatoes are not fit to eat. people have become violently ill from eating green potatoes. If there is just a slight tint of green, peel the potatoes and its ok to use the flesh if it is white. keep potataoes in a dark place and this wont be a problem.
if potatoes are sprouted just a bit, cut the sprouts off and use them, but if there are long sprouts the strength of the potatoe has gone to the sprouts. they are safe to eat, but generally they are soft and discarded. Dad would have planted any potatoes that sprout. today they usually treat potatoes so they don't sprout so easily.

to boil potatoes, cut them into quarters, usually with their skins on, unless they are old potatoes that you want to peel. Cover them in cold water and bring to a boil and cook until soft. they boil over easily, so put them in a pan that allows for expansion. They are started in cold water because they are a thick veggie and it allows a more even cooking. If you are in a hurry, and want to cover them with boiling water, cut the pieces small.

after cooking, remove the potato skins unless they are new potatoes. Serve hot if you want. Most of the vitamins are under the surface of the skin, so if you peel potatoes, do so thinly.

For potato salad - cool the potatoes and chop and combine with one or two boiled eggs. Add some Miracle whip salad dressing and you have it.
to make it more interesting, add green onions, cukes, parsley or dill. to the salad dressing you can combine some low fat sour cream to reduce the calories. add some dried herbs.

hash browns - chop the cooled potatoes and put a drizzle of olive oil in a frypan. add the potatoes, pepper and lightly brown. If you have a leftover baked potato you can use it as well.

soup - potatoes can be chopped fine, or grated and added to any soup. potatoes cook quickly and they add substance to a soup or stew.

potatoes do not have much flavor of their own, so they carry the flavors you add. Usually you only add about 3 strong flavors to a dish, so they don't overwhelm your taste buds. Onions often accompany potatoes.

It's been a couple days now since my gf told me she's pregnant. We didn't plan it, and to tell the truth it kind of caught me off guard at the same time as I felt like I was ready for it all along.

The first few breezes speak of the winds of change to come. The hint of hurricanes and tornado's around the corner alluded to in its mildest of whistles. If not for the flutter of countless leaves one might almost doubt its presence, but once it's taken in the animations are really very numerous and vibrant.

Perhaps the task might be to create a life, the only life, that I might look at and say "Ok, maybe i'd have liked to be him or her a little more than I wanted to be myself"

How will I know the first change? How will I know when I actually feel like I have something to live for, because, despite how good at living I've been during the latest years of my life, I'm not particularly attached to life. Despite loving it, I could easily do without it. I'm no longer concerned by death, having long grown bored of worrying incessantly about whether it was soon to approach.

I am free. I am ready. I remain free to make another ready. Maybe my joy becomes more joy. Maybe my life becomes more life.

I speculate how my emotions will change in the months to come. With every passing day becoming passing months becoming growing certainty... Right now it's still easy to sport both casual disbelief and acceptance. Which one could/will diminish first?

I just want to say how happy I am to have been alive in the "Federer era" where I was able to watch Roger Federer win his 5th Wimbledon title in a row live on the television. It was such a thrilling match to watch. I was on the edge of my seat and involved in watching the game like I never had been before. You gotta give it to Nadal for being the first person to take Federer to five sets at Wimbledon since Federer started his streak. In the fifth set Federer was down 15-40 in two games and was able to pull himself out of those holes to win. He then broke Nadal on his next two service games to win the tournament with an overhead smash! Fantastic!!

I can't believe the people I've been able to find through facebook.com in just 3 days. So many people who moved away and I lost touch with, seemingly permanently... just a search away. People from highschool where the prevaling in thing at the time was being cool and making sure everyone knew it now all grown up and pursuing careers and families and sharing their experiences with people who'd have never guessed they'd be associating in some distant future. It's pretty amazing. I suggest if you haven't tried it to give it a whirl. Even if you use an alias just to search the database, you may be very surprised by the results you get.

I'm in the Kelowna BC network. I'm done raving. Now I have to figure out new travel plans for the summer so I can see some of these people who I haven't seen in over 10 years?!

Oh speaking of which, I'm taking off to the Vancouver area from the 20th to the 24th. Going to visit Grandma and Habby and various other people. Maybe I'll visit Jonix just before I leave so I can fuck up his racquet hand so he doesn't play tennis without me...

For the first time ever, Roger Federer, world's number 1 in tennis, has managed to beat Rafael Nadal on clay. Thus ended Nadal's 81 match win streak on clay, the longest win streak on any one surface. The French Open is just around the corner, and for the first time ever, Roger will be going into it with the concrete knowledge that he can beat the reigning champion, Mr Nadal. A new foil for Roger

I woke up at noon today and turned on the TV in time to see Roger Federer lose to Guillermo Canas for the second consecutive match in 2 tournaments. It seems Federer may have a new foil in Canas. Canas is only the 5th person in pro-tennis to record back to back wins against Federer.

Canas knocked Federer out early in the last tournament they played (Indian Wells), ending Roger's 41 match win streak. It was so early that televised coverage of the tournament hadn't even started. I felt a little robbed at not being able to see Federer play.

So they met up again in this tournament(Key Biscayne), and while it looked like Roger was going to pull it together, Canas was able to turn being broken twice in the last set into a tiebreaker and eventually a win. From the little I saw at the end, it seemed like Roger was kind of falling apart. I hope he glues himself back together.

While I'm sad for the world's #1, I'm sure Roger will put his newfound time to use training to win the 2nd of 4 grand slams this year: The French Open

I'd like to see Canas VS Nadal to see how the two Roger-killers stack up against each other...

It ain't easy being Dustix either. He was the one on the other side and still is as a matter of fact! I mean, look at those balls flying at me! This is live coverage! I'm blogging this post right now by squeezing my racquet computer at different pressures. The light you see is the result of massive lights powered by the near hurricane-force wall of air that Dustix and I are pushing into the windmills we had the foresight to install here at the Polson tennis courts. And the only reason I'm able to keep my left foot off the ground is because he's hitting them so f*n hard that they push me back from hitting them!

After a few days of this (I cleared the time off from work with my boss via my handy sweaterphone) I should probably look something like this:

I should meet Habby at 6/49 and together, with our two secrets combining, we'll lock probability right where we(I) want it!

I've long known that I've had a secret. Something which enables me to do things and partake of experience in a way that would never be possible without it. But my secret was never a whole secret. It has always been half a secret. Habby has the other half of the secret. Never can we know each other's half, but we can combine to create a reaction.

The only time I've ever played my Nintendo DS and watched TV at the same time, I started playing Top Spin 2 right after I popped Airheads into my player. A little ways in I realise I'm missing stuff but I don't really care. Then I look up and see a woman who's supposed to be watching the security monitor right by her head but is missing it because she's playing a similar handheld game system...

Multiply movies owned by occasions where I could have played my DS while watching a movie? Is that the equation for the odds? I'm not good at calculating odds.

Dustin and I been playing with yo-yos lately, to the widespread amusement of onlookers. Our trip to Kelowna today to get my passport application in and scout out some yo-yos didn't turn up much for yo-yos. And to top it off, the passport office is open 2pm-8pm, so we were about 2 hrs too early by the time we finally got there. (I had to return to Kelowna later today to get it done and was accosted by a small boy at the passport office who wanted to put the gank on my yo-yo!)

Dustin did manage to turn up a couple yo-yos. One is a dual-mode classic/clutch yo-yo which is pretty cool. The other one he got is the pieces of a yo-yo that resembled a tire when he bought it.

We left the store after Dustin strong-armed a clerk into helping him. Him, me, and the yo-yo. Only him and I made it. We're walking up to my car and I'm just disarming the alarm and I turn around in time to see Dustin send his brand new yo-yo down to the ground into a little mini explosion of black plastic as the simulated rubber of the tire broke off and went flying in different directions. As we got into the car I noticed an employee outside the store and I was trying to convince Dustin to throw the receipt and the yoyo out the window at her feet as we drove by and yell "it's all crap!" at her. By the time we would have been ready to deploy Dustin was onboard with the plan, but unfortunately she had already gone back inside.

I found this video of a yo-yo trickster and wow. I felt amazement mixed with inadequacy, lol. Just watch it.

We pull up to this large, white house. I have no idea why we're there, or where we are.

I go into the front door of the house with 2 other people. There's this kind of patio entry up to the front door. All around the front door is a glass wall and we can see into the foyer. I have no idea why we're there. The door opens for us and we walk in. There's four panels on the wall. Each one is square and they all have some amount of bright neon green in them. I can't make out anything else in the painting except for these random blotches of green.

I understand suddenly we're here to steal and I want no part of it. My escape urge is reckless, and I make a lot of noise fleeing the foyer. I could care less about my accomplices who've obviously tricked me into being their getaway driver.

My escape noise alerts someone in the house and they start to come out the balcony door, up and to the right from the foyer. By this point I've already got my car door open and I'm getting in just as the door opens. I look up at the balcony, through my tinted windows, and I see my friend Robin's Dad, Art, is the one who came to look outside. I can't fuckin' believe this shit.

I'm suddenly faced with a dilemma and I sit behind the wheel, thinking, with my door open. Just then, one of my accomplices jumps in the passenger seat, arms full of stuff, and quite obviously panicked. Art's not on the balcony anymore, and I don't think he saw me before I got into the car...

I jump out of the car and I'm running down the embankment towards some back yards of other houses. I'll tell the cops the car was stolen from me earlier, and with nobody out looking about, nobody will really think anything of me jogging through their neighbourhood. When did I figure this out? Did I know back when I was jumping out of the car?

One of the guys who was there to steal was running away with me though. I was freaked out cuz I wanted them to get caught and I wanted to get away without anyone ever seeing us together. I told him to scram and for some reason, it worked instantly.

Now I'm running up to a busy road with fast traffic. I can control time. Time has slowed in my environment, but I'm moving normally. I step onto the front of the car and jump up just as time around me resumes and I soar into the air. Suddenly all thoughts of my getaway vanish as I'm suddenly obsessed with the art of chronologically-altered vehicular-springboarding. I just keep jumping off cars, but my control of time starts to slip. I see a train speeding by and I can't figure out how to launch off the cars since they have nothing to step up on and I can't seem to slow the train down long enough to penetrate it's blurry perimeter.

Speaking of bunnies, I got to visit a local shelter for rabbits. Rabbits roam the neighbourhood eating gardens and getting killed by dogs and cats. A woman came into the store a lil while back and asked if we would give her our lettuce trimmings. She then explained how she captures these domestic rabbits gone wild and then lets people adopt them. She invited me up to see them, and at the urging of my boss who wanted to make sure she wasn't just eating all the scrap lettuce herself, I did pay a visit to the bunnies. Bunnies sure like having their ears rubbed and having their chins stroked. Watching rabbits gnaw on a carrot you're holding is a lot of fun too. One day, I may need to promote some of my gerbils to rabbits. If anyone is interested in visiting the wabbits, lemme know. She said I could visit the rabbits whenever I like. :D

Last night was the first time I've ever played hacky sack with a hacky sack that was ON FIRE MOTHERFUCKERS!! Johnny Dragon brought it over to Dustix's place while we were hanging out and it's quite the show to see people kicking a fireball around with flames that trailed out over a foot. A little scary though when it went under my car and sat there burning. I imagined my car exploding as I dropped to my face to retrieve it from nearly the exact middle where it had rolled to.

NOTE: There will be no more flaming hacks within kicking range of my car.

But aside from the momentary panic it was all good, hehe.

Played badminton for the first time tonight, finally. My feet are getting toughened up from the hours standing, walking, and lifting at my job. They still kinda hurt a bit after work, but I can tell it's only a couple more weeks at most til I feel no pain at all. The first week was hell. At least my boss is nice and let me wear my court shoes, contrary to dress code, for the first week.

Anyways, badminton was pretty good. I walked on when I first got there, Jon hadn't shown up yet, and I was pulled into a game. I then broke the news to my partner (all doubles play) that it was my first time playing badminton. He looked a little reluctant at first, lol, but he was patient and kindof explained the rules. I made all the mistakes I could and there were a lot of laughs. My two-handed backhand really cracked them up. "Tennis" I explained. I kept starting to go to the back of the court to serve and then remembering I could serve from midcourt. Naturally, we had our asses handed to us, but it felt good to win the next game when I partnered up with Jon, and to give the next couple of opponents a close game. Then Jon played with some other people and I had to face off with the pros and once again looked the part of a fish out of water. Someone cracked they could tell I was a tennis player when I pulled a birdie out of my pocket, lol. I'm looking forward to going again and having that to do 2 nights a week til tennis starts up.

One of the ladies made a screwed up face when I mentioned I'd stop badminton as soon as I could get on the tennis courts. She was only thinking about the fact that badminton happens at night and tennis in the day, but I don't want to cross my wires when I start in hard to the tennis this year. I kept trying to put spin on my shots tonight. Kinda hard to get topspin on a birdie, or a slice overhead smash. On a positive note, some of my best shots were mishits. You can really hear the metal when the birdie hits the edge. People are like "good shot" but you know they know.

Last night Dustix came over and we started off with watching the recording of Federer dismantling Roddick in 3 short sets. Then at 12:30am it was time for the men's final.

#10th seed - Fernando Gonzalez:

#1 seed - Roger Federer

The first set was really intense as Gonzalez had set points, but Federer pulled it all together and in the end was the first person since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win a slam event without dropping a single set, and I think there's 2 more matches in slam tournaments currently. This was Roger's tenth slam title. Not only that, but he became the first person to ever win 3 different slam titles 3 times each. Not only that, but winning this final extended his win streak to his personal record of 36 matches. His previous win streak was 35 matches which ended back in 2006.

It was so funny after the match when the president of the tennis association in Australia came out and said "Fernando you've accomplished many good things this tournament.., and Roger, you're special."

Roger is on track for this year and this may be the year he makes a calendar slam (winning all 4 slam events in one year). If he can just beat Nadal on clay...

Watching Federer play and seeing how easy he makes it look really makes me want to go out and hit some balls. Too bad spring is months away. Thank god I don't play warcraft anymore. Maybe this year will be the year I compete locally :D

It's about a half hour past midnight, and I'm getting ready to watch the semifinal of the AUS Open between Roddick and Federer. The air is filled with an energy as everyone waits to see if the new and improved Andy can put an end to Roger's 12-1 ownership of him, or if Roger can take him in straight sets as he seeks to be the first person to win a slam title without dropping a set since Bjorn Borg in 1980.

I stood in the aisle watching her look through the glass at the frozen delights. Without realizing it, her reflection was also watching her, so now I knew I had a friend. Red was my color. I walked up behind her, gained another friend, and the trinity of our conspiracy was complete. The fourth had no idea what was to come next, but by no means did the 3 of us have designs on her with any sort of frozen delight.
